UCI womens Pro team Team Saccarelli-EMU-Marsciano ready to take on the world's best in 2007.

Team Saccarelli-EMU has been one of the womens' UCI pro teams to steadily work it's way up the UCI rankings over the last few seasons to finish 2006 ranked 14th in the world. The team's success has been built around nurturing young home grown Italian riders and bringing in experienced foreign riders to support them.

The team is based is the beautiful town of Marsciano on the Umbria/Tuscany boarder and rides a mix of the Italain UCI races and the women's world cup as well as the big European classics. It's sponsors include the Italian bike company, Saccarelli, the luxury garden furniture company, EMU and the town of Marsciano itself, which has taken some of the world's best female cyclists under it's wing.

Saccarelli-EMU is undoubtedly build around it's core team leader, Monia Baccaille. Baccaille is a Sprinter- Rouleur who can get over the big mountains and still be there to pack a punch in the final sprint. In the 2006 womens' Tour of Italy  she was rarely outside the top 7 in the sprint finishes.
She also won the 2006 Coppa de Laghi Italian classic, a stage of the Trophee d'Or Feminin and came 3rd in the Tour Of Flanders.  As a long term member of Team Saccarelli and the Italian national team, she will have the strongest team yet in 2007 to support her in her bid for stage race and one day classics wins.

Amongst her team mates are a riders who, given the chance are more than capable of stealing a win for themselves. These include:

  • Alessandra D'Ettorre (Itlay), the 2000 European road race champion is another strong sprinter and classics rider who won the final stage of the 2006 Giro de Toscana in emphatic style. D'Ettore will not only be a perfect lead out for Baccaille in 2007 but will also be there to take the spoils herself when the opportunity arises
  • Leda Cox (Great Britain), who is now one of the most experienced English Professionals in the peleton, will be a strong addition to the squad in 2007. Cox brings with her the experience of having been a successful team leader in her first Pro team in Holland 3 years ago and having ridden for two more Pro teams since then has developed a reputation for herself on the circuit as a selfless super-domestique. Cox's job will be to protect her team leader and get into breakaways to give the team options out on the road.
  • Giovanna Trodli (Itlay) is a 3 times Italian national time trial champion and former world champion on the track. She should prove a powerful addition to the team and will widen the squad's options when it comes to breakaways and a lead out train for Baccaille.

The team's season is now building towards the Tour of Flanders in early April where the aim will be to better Baccaille's 3rd place last year. This is followed by all the European classics such as the Ronde Van Drenthe, Fleche Wallone and the Berne World cup in Switzerland.  Being Italian, the team's biggest target for the year will be the Giro D'Italia. After that they are also taking in the women's Tour De France before building up to the end of season world cups and a place in the worlds' top 10 teams.

"There's something about getting grimy and sweaty with the gals. You feel like you're breaking the rules. You're not made of sugar and spice and everything nice. You're not someone's girlfriend and you're not someone's mother. For that moment, at least, all you have to be is a cyclist."
