by William Meertens last modified 15-01-2007 08:49

Throughout the last few years Specialized has been developing there women’s specific line. For the 2007 season Specialized has taken it to the next level as the title sponsor of the new UCI women’s team “Specialized Designs For Women”. The team is based in central Europe in Zürich, Switzerland. The young women’s team, managed by Roger Rüegg, will focus mainly on the Swiss races while bringing in specific international races to give the young women the support and experience they need.

The team will be racing the 2007 season on the Specialized Ruby. “Specialized is the perfect fit for us as a team. They are focused on really finding out who the woman athlete is as a customer and they have fulfilled it. I have never been so happy to be on a new bike. Not only is the Ruby made to the geometry of a women, it is made for women who want to take the lead!” Larssyn Rüegg, team member.

Sarah Grab joins Specialized from team Univega to take a leadership role along with former Nürnberg rider Birgit Söllner, and the top Swiss mountain biker and newly crowned cyclo cross champion Katrin Leumann. “The team is fairly young, but the attitude is there and with a strong web of team work the doors are open for a lot of opportunities” commented Roger Ruegg. Carolina Lüthi, Swiss, bronze medalist 2006 European Track Championships; Daniela Della Torre, Swiss; Rosi Mayer, German; Catrine Josefsson, Sweedish; Mirjam Senn, top Swiss sprinter; Fabien Wolfberger, Swiss; Larssyn Rüegg, formally Larssyn Staley and multiple time US National Champion and 2003 Junior World Points Race Champion; and Nicole Käser, Swiss, 2006 Swiss Women’s Cup Champion round out the rest of the team..

"Fear is something you have to learn to control and use to your advantage because everyone has it. The difference is how you let it affect you. You have to be confident. If I'm at the top of the course and I notice a racer with fear in her eyes, I go up to her and say, "Be strong and find the way of the peaceful warrior" your're gonna do great."
