Priska Doppmann concludes her unique career

by William Meertens last modified 31-08-2008 12:29

The 37-year-old top athlete Priska Doppmann (SUI) from the Cervélo-Lifeforce Pro Cycling Team concludes her long and unique cycling sports career.

Doppmann was in last 10 year a leading person in the women’s cycling in Switzerland and worldwide. 1998 started the native athlete from Zug, coming from Triathlon and running, her career and already in 1999 she competed in her first of eight Road World Championships. Rapidly, the career of the personable athlete ascends and was only one time interrupted for six month by the illness mononucleosis in the year 2003.

In her 10-years-cycling sports career achieved Priska Doppmann at three Olympic Summer Games, three top ten (2004: 9th place in time trail, 2008: 7th place in road race & 8th place in time trial). At World Championships, she finished in total five times among the best ten. In 2006 she was very close to the top three but she edge out of the podium and took the fourth place in the time trial.  To the long and successful career belongs also two World Cup victories, as well as two team overall World Cup victories and two stage-races overall victories.

On the zenith of her career, Priska Doppmann says now good bye from the active high level sports and will turn now to a new period of life. “I had a long and awesome time in women’s cycling”, explained Priska Doppmann, “however it was already clear for me after Athens 2004, that I will reset new impulses in my life and face to other challenges after the Olympics in 2008.

That I reached two Olympic diploma’s (places among the top eight) in Beijing and could conclude my career on the zenith of my performance, means a lot for me and crowned my career.

But all my great results and success was not possible without the support of several persons like my coach and partner Thomas Campana, my entire family, all the team members and stuff around, Swiss Olympic and Swiss Cycling as well as my sponsors, supplier and patrons. I would like the say “thank you” to all of them for their tireless support.”

Roland Richner, Chief of competitive sports from Swiss Cycling expressed his feelings to the retirement: „The constant performances of Priska at the Olympics and World Championships are unique for the Swiss women cycling. Beside her amazing success as an athlete and team leader, Priska distinguish herself with a huge know-how. As a graduated cycling coach she brings her knowledge into our talent get-together from Swiss Cycling. Also in the future, her know-how will stay in the cycling sport with her own team Cervélo-Lifeforce Pro Cycling and hopefully as well for Swiss Cycling.“

Priska Doppmann will continue to work in the cycling business. In the future, she will be more involved in her own business - the company Cycling United Bikes & Components AG- which she founded in 2007.

Beside this engagement, Priska Doppmann will be also involved in the planning and organization of her cycling Team Cervélo-Lifeforce Pro Cycling, which will try again to call attention with great performances in the cycling sports in this year’s World Championships and as well in the season 2009.

"Fear is something you have to learn to control and use to your advantage because everyone has it. The difference is how you let it affect you. You have to be confident. If I'm at the top of the course and I notice a racer with fear in her eyes, I go up to her and say, "Be strong and find the way of the peaceful warrior" your're gonna do great."
